Eligibility

All applicants must have at least one year of clinical training (PGY-1) in an ACGME-approved training program. Everyone is encouraged to apply regardless of primary board certification. Graduates of foreign medical schools must have current ECFMG certification. Military funded applicants are encouraged to apply.

Many of our trainees have prior experience in a variety of settings, including the U.S. military. Successful applicants to our program have demonstrated commitment to public health and the field of occupational and environmental medicine. 

Funding for the program comes primarily from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and is only available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

How to Apply:

  1. Applicants to the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Program must apply via the online School of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) system.
  2. Go to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Admissions webpage, click on Prospective Students, How to Apply, then proceed to apply to SOPHAS.
  3. Applicants to the two-year residency training program should select "RES/MPH OEM" as their degree program. Only one application is required; both the residency program and the MPH admissions committees will review applications separately and simultaneously. Acceptance by the school’s MPH program is required for admission to the residency program.
  4. Applicants interested in the American Board of Preventive Medicine's Complementary Pathway who have an earned MPH from an accredited U.S. program and meet the requirements for the pathway should contact the residency program before applying.
  5. Residency applicants are not required to submit GRE scores; however, USMLE scores  are required (please request official USMLE scores be sent via email to bsph.admissions@jhu.edu) and MCAT scores may be submitted as well. Non-native English speakers may be required to submit recent TOEFL scores.
  6. Applicants who have not completed a full residency in a primary care specialty must request a "summative evaluation" be sent to this program from the director of their internship year training program.

Interviews

For the safety of all due to COVID-19, applicants selected for interviews will be invited in small groups for virtual interviews. The interview day comprises of interviews with faculty, attendance at noon conference and residency seminar, and discussion with current residents. Interviews are scheduled on Mondays during early December. All occupational medicine residency programs have a voluntary uniform decision date each year, typically in December or January. Applicants will be notified on or shortly after this date of the decision of the OEMR Admissions Committee.
