Fall Institute in Health Policy and Management

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona, with the collaboration of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, are pleased to announce the 21st Annual Johns Hopkins Fall Institute in Health Policy and Management, offered in November 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

The Institute provides a unique opportunity for public health students and professionals to take short-term, intensive educational courses and workshops in a variety of public health disciplines. It is jointly sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona (Barcelona Public Health Agency). With the collaboration of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, the Institute serves as a convenient venue for public health professionals to begin or enhance their education with a focus on key health-policy issues. Participants explore current innovations, tested approaches to management and leadership, and different strategies for effective policy implementation.

Courses in the Fall Institute are taught by distinguished faculty whose research and practice contribute new knowledge on a wide range of public health, health and social policy and health care issues, and who work with public health and health care leaders at local, national and international levels.The Institute is a unique opportunity to learn with colleagues and others how to apply theory to real-world situations.The flexibility of the Institute’s curriculum allows participants to choose courses across a broad array of offerings, selecting courses that best meet individual educational and professional goals.

The Fall Institute provides the same academically rigorous courses offered during the traditional academic year at the Bloomberg School’s main campus in Baltimore, but compressed into a shorter period of time.To take full advantage of this learning opportunity, Fall Institute participants receive and read materials prior to the beginning of the course sessions, allowing for immediate and intensive in-class discussion and application of concepts to real-world examples.  

The Fall Institute also offers intensive workshops, delivered by members of the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB) alongside consultant professors from the John Hopkins University. These workshops focus on current pressing issues in public health, offering professionals from the ASPB and invited institutions the opportunity to develop strategies and action plans for tackling these challenges.

All instruction is in English (except for specific workshops as noted); students choosing to take a course for Johns Hopkins academic credit must hold a bachelor’s degree.

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has enjoyed a close working relationship with The Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona for many years. This relationship was strengthened with the establishment of the first Johns Hopkins Fall Institute in Health Policy and Management, sponsored by The Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona and the Bloomberg School, with the collaboration of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, in 2003. With courses offered for one month each year, the Fall Institute has grown to attract public health professionals and students from around the globe to participate in the offerings given by faculty from the Johns Hopkins University and The Agència de Salut Pública de Barcelona.
