A master's degree from the Bloomberg School catalyzes the powers of education, science, partnerships, people, and advocacy. We offer nine different master’s degree programs to train you to become the next public health leader.

Funding and Scholarships
The Bloomberg School awards several competitive merit and need-based scholarships to accepted students who are pursuing a degree program. There is no separate application process for scholarships, with the exception of the MSPH Need-Based Scholarship, Bloomberg Fellowship, and Vivien Thomas Scholars Initiative. All materials you submit with your online application are important for the scholarship review process.
Master of Public Health (MPH)
The MPH prepares students to become leading public health professionals capable of addressing current global health problems with multidisciplinary, evidence-based approaches.
With the flexible nature of the program, students can choose to customize their elective coursework based on their interests and professional goals. Or, students can select from 12 multidisciplinary concentration areas that are designed for students wishing to have a guided curriculum in a focused area.
The MPH requires at least two years of post-baccalaureate, health-related work experience. Please review our Admissions Requirements for details.
Wide range of flexible formats:
- 11 months to 4 years, depending on format.
- Part-time or full-time.
- Online, onsite, or a combination.
Students complete a practicum and a capstone project.
Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH)
The MSPH degree programs are tailored for students seeking focused public health training and skill building.
Our unique field placement pairs focused academic training with real-world experiences and prepares students for public health careers.
The program is offered by four departments and can be pursued immediately after undergrad.
Onsite, Full-time: 2 years
Students complete a 4- to 11-month field placement.
Master of Science (ScM)
Our ScM degree programs provide the opportunity for students to conduct original, hands-on public health research.
The ScM prepares students for academic careers, research-based careers, or future PhD study.
The ScM is offered by six departments, and most departments do not require any prior experience.
Onsite, Full-time: 2 years
Students complete one year of original research and a thesis.
Master of Health Science (MHS)
The MHS degree is a department-based program designed for students seeking to build advanced expertise in a specific area of public health.
The MHS offers a flexible curriculum, allowing students to develop specialized knowledge and analytical skills in their chosen field. This program prepares students for further graduate work or research careers.
The MHS is offered by nine departments, and most departments do not require prior professional experience for the MHS.
Onsite, Full-time: Most are nine months; some take 1–2 years.
Online: Offered only by departments of Health Policy and Management, Mental Health, and Population, Family and Reproductive Health.
Students complete a thesis/project.
Master of Health Administration (MHA)
The MHA, often referred to as the business degree of public health, is uniquely designed for future health care executives early in their careers.
The MHA provides students with the analytical, technical, and management skills required to lead in hospitals and health systems, the health insurance industry, and consulting firms.
This program is offered by the Department of Health Policy and Management.
Onsite, Full-time: 2 years
Students complete a full-time, paid residency.
Master of Bioethics (MBE)
The MBE focuses on the ethics of clinical medicine, research, science, and public health.
This innovative, multidisciplinary program combines approaches from science and technology, the humanities and arts, and public health and medicine to prepare students to investigate and address the bioethics challenges of professional and civic life.
The MBE is a collaborative program between the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the Bloomberg School.
Onsite, Full-time: 1.5 years
Onsite, Part-time: 2–4 years
Students complete a thesis.
Master of Science (MS) in Toxicology for Human Risk Assessment
The only program of its kind in the U.S., the MS focuses on the fundamental concepts and testing approaches used in classic risk assessment processes.
The MS equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to begin or advance their careers in the evolving field of human health and environmental risk assessment.
This program is offered by the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering.
Onsite, Full-time: 2 years
Onsite, Part-time: 2.5 years
Online, Part-time: 2.5 years
Students complete a 7- to 12-month internship.
Master of Applied Science (MAS)
The MAS program prepares public health practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to address complex public health challenges.
The hands-on training is valuable to both those with an established career and to those who have recently entered the workforce.
We offer three MAS programs:
Online, Part-time: 2–3 years
Students complete a project applying coursework to a real-world public health issue.
Master of Arts in Public Health Biology (MAPHB)
The MAPHB program focuses on biological tenets and research methods relevant to current public health issues.
The MAPHB is suited for both students and working professionals.
It is an interdepartmental degree that crosses three biological science-based departments: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Environmental Health and Engineering, and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology.
Online, Part-time: 2–3 years
