How to Apply
Thank you for your interest in our programs. Based on your selected program, you will apply through one of two application services. Please pay close attention to your program's application requirements and deadlines. All programs require the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor's degree.
Applicants to Doctoral, Master's, and Residencies utilize SOPHAS.
All Certificate, Bachelor's/Master's (JHU undergraduates only), and Special Student Regular applicants apply through SOPHAS Express. Certificate requirements and procedures vary by department, program, and student status. Please carefully review the appropriate certificate program page for requirements.

Official Transcripts
Transcripts from U.S. Institutions and English Speaking Canada
The Bloomberg School requires official academic records, transcripts, or mark sheets from ALL colleges, universities, graduate, or professional schools attended. Even if grades and credits from one institution appear on your home institution’s transcript, we require the transcript from the school where the credits originated. This includes post-graduate certificates and any educational history listed in the CV.
It is important that you do not send transcripts to SOPHAS until you list the institution sending the transcript in the “Colleges Attended” section. You will need to have your SOPHAS ID# included on the Transcript. Follow SOPHAS instructions on their Applicant Help Center.
Special instructions on how to handle study abroad transcripts can be found on the SOPHAS Study Abroad and Overseas US transcripts help page.
International Academic Records
If you are an international student or a U.S. student who is/has studied outside the U.S. or English Speaking Canada, except for studying abroad, your international academic records must undergo a credentials evaluation. More information may be found on our International Applicant page.
Standardized Test Scores
Standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, MCAT) requirements are determined by each academic program at the Bloomberg School. Please carefully review drop down lists to determine if your program test scores are required, optional, or not required/not reviewed.
English Language Proficiency
For International Applicants, an English proficiency test score (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English, Pearson Test for English) is required. Please carefully review the schoolwide score minimums, test submission instructions, and exemptions from the English Language Proficiency requirement.
Three Letters of Recommendation
Letters of Recommendation may only be received through the SOPHAS application portal. Letters may come from professional or academic references, or a mix of both. SOPHAS does not allow individual submission of letters to programs. Therefore, admissions committees are aware the letters of recommendation are general and not specific to the program or school.
Resume
As part of the application, all applicants will upload a resume or curriculum vitae to SOPHAS or SOPHAS Express.
Statement of Purpose and Objectives
The Statement of Purpose and Objectives is the applicant's opportunity to share with the admission committee their passion for public health, their interest in the program and research projects, and any other relevant information not included in the rest of the application.
Verification
Once SOPHAS receives all official transcripts and at least two recommendation letters, they will verify your application. Verification is the process used to ensure all of your coursework was entered correctly and consistently. Applications must be verified for BSPH to consider them complete and ready for review.
Applicants are most often denied verification for transfer credits and dual enrollment coursework taken in high school. Please be sure to submit transcripts from the institution that issued the course credit.
Deadlines
Application deadlines vary by department, degree program, and sometimes degree track. Know which one applies to you!
APPLY EARLY: SOPHAS requires four to six weeks to verify the application. Although we only require that the application be submitted by the deadline, we strongly encourage you to apply early enough for your application to also be completed with supporting documents (transcripts, test scores, credential evaluations, and letters of recommendation) by the deadline. Supporting documents are due two weeks after the deadline.
Application Preparation Timeline
The application opens mid-August for the following academic year. Depending on individual circumstances, components of the application can take more than three months to prepare. Admissions Services strongly recommends applicants begin preparing materials well before the program deadline.
