How to Apply*

  • To apply to the Categorical General Preventive Medicine Residency Program or the Categorical General Preventive Medicine Residency Program - Primary Care and Community Prevention Track apply via the online School of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) system. Additional information and a link to SOPHAS may be found on the Admissions Office webpage.
    • Applicants to the training program should select the appropriate designation listed in SOPHAS (i.e. RES/MPH GPMR 2025, RES/GPMR 2025) as their degree program. Only one application is required.
    • Please see the list of Required Application Materials below before beginning your online application.  All application materials should be submitted to SOPHAS as instructed.
    • The residency program and the MPH admissions committees will review the applications once they are complete. Acceptance by the school's MPH program is required for admission to the residency program.
    • The residency program will participate in the NRMP "Match" effective for those applying to the July 2025 or later cohorts.

  • To apply to the Hopkins-MedStar Combined Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine Residency Program or the Hopkins-Bassett Healthcare Transitional Internship Program, applicants must first apply to the respective program in ERAS. The ERAS application will be screened by both programs.
    • Applicants who meet the criteria and are selected for an interview will then be contacted and invited to apply to the Hopkins General Preventive Medicine Residency Program-Hopkins Master of Public Health (GPMR/MPH RES) through SOPHAS. Invited applicants will complete one application to the Hopkins GPMR/MPH Program, which will be reviewed by both the Hopkins GPMR and MPH Admissions Committees. Acceptance to the Hopkins MPH program is required for admission to the residency program.  Applicants should not submit their SOPHAS application until contacted by the GPMR program. The program will supply specific instructions at that time.
    • Applicants who have been invited to apply to either of these programs and who have earned their MPH degree, may be eligible to apply to the RES-GPMR program. Note: You may be required to take additional ACGME-required preventive medicine coursework.
    • Subsequent to the interview process, applicants will register for the "Match" and indicate a preference for the Hopkins-MedStar Combined Family Medicine/Preventive Medicine or Hopkins-Bassett Transitional program. If an applicant matches with that program, he/she will complete an internship year prior to beginning the first year of GPMR residency training (PGY-2) at Johns Hopkins.
