Dr. LaPrincess C. Brewer is a cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Mayo Clinic Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in Rochester, MN. She was awarded the highly competitive, National Institutes of Health (NIH) Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health (BIRCWH) Scholar Award and the KL2 Mentored Career Development Award to expand her work as a clinical investigator.  She was inducted to the inaugural class of the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Health distinction by the National Minority Quality Forum and named Person of the Year in Health Care by the PostBulletin in 2016. Her research and community engagement initiatives have been recognized by a number of prestigious awards including the Minnesota American College of Physicians Volunteerism Award in 2017. Dr. Brewer’s primary research interest is focused on addressing cardiovascular health disparities through community-based behavioral interventions for cardiovascular disease risk factor modification in racial/ethnic minority populations, particularly African-American faith communities. She also has a special interest in increasing minority participation in cardiovascular clinical trials. She has published on faith-based interventions for cardiovascular disease prevention, racial differences in weight maintenance among women, and psychosocial factors influencing cardiovascular health. Her community health advocacy efforts through research have been featured on both local and national media outlets such as the Mayo Clinic News Network, PBS, CNN, Reuters and the Huffington Post.
