Sophia L. Johnson, PharmD, MPH, PhD

Assistant Professor and early stage investigator at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy

Her research focuses on understanding chronic disease self-management and related barriers and facilitators, particularly for patients with complicated drug therapy regimens from low-resourced communities. Engaging with populations, she seeks to develop and tailor interventions to support and improve pharmacotherapy use, chronic disease self-management and associated health outcomes.  Her PhD dissertation, a funded AHRQ F32, “Predictors, Use & Consequences of Biologics & Other Agents in Older IBD Patients,” was an investigation of drug utilization in older chronic disease patients at risk for receiving inappropriate therapy and treatments that are difficult to self-manage.  She recently worked with community partners and co-investigators to submit a proposal evaluating a community-based care coordination program using a mixed methods action research framework.  Dr. Johnson graduated with her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Illinois-College of Pharmacy, completed two pharmacy residencies and has an extensive work history in clinical pharmacy.  She received her Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Minnesota; earned her PhD in Population Health Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine & Public Health, and completed a certificate in Clinical and Community Outcomes Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine & Public Health Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.
