Andrew Cohen, MD, PhD

Cohen1

Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine
Yale University

Andrew Cohen attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania after receiving a doctorate in English literature at Oxford, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Weill Cornell Medical Center and a fellowship in geriatrics at Yale School of Medicine. His work focuses on surrogate decision-making for patients with dementia. He has developed a special interest in patients who are unrepresented or “unbefriended” because they have diminished capacity and no suitable family member or friend to make decisions on their behalf. Since joining the Yale faculty in 2015, he has received funding from the Donaghue Foundation, the Yale Pepper Center, and the NIA GEMSSTAR program for research on guardianship, which is the default mechanism for identifying a surrogate decision-maker in such cases. He recently received a Paul B. Beeson (K76) Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging from the NIA to develop novel advance care planning tools for this population.
