About the Community-Based Public Health Certificate Program

The certificate program aims to develop students’ skills and competencies for careers in both community-based public health practice and research, particularly for applications in underserved urban settings. By marrying training in these two areas, this certificate program prepares future community public health practitioners and researchers to collaborate. The certificate program trains recipients in the skills and knowledge necessary for community-based public health program development, management and evaluation, community-based participatory research (CBPR) and other research in community settings, including:

CULTURAL COMPETENCY SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

  1. Identify the role of cultural, social, and behavioral factors in determining the delivery of community-based public health
  2. Utilize appropriate methods for interacting sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, and persons of all ages and lifestyle preferences
  3. Develop and adapt approaches to problems that take into account cultural differences

LINKING SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES OF DISEASE AND COMMUNITY HEALTH

  1. Define, assess, and understand the health status of populations, determinants of health and illness, factors contributing to health promotion and disease prevention, and factors influencing the use of health services impacting communities
  2. Understand the historical development, structure, and interaction of national and local public health and health care systems
  3. Identify and apply research methods appropriate for community-based applications

COMMUNITY DIMENSIONS OF PRACTICE SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

  1. Promote the utilization of leadership, team building, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills to build community partnerships and maintain key stakeholders
  2. Utilize best practices for engaging in effective community partnerships
  3. Identify community assets and available resources

Admissions Requirements

Degree Students

All Johns Hopkins University graduate students are eligible for admission to this certificate program, with the exception of BSPH MAS students, who are not eligible to apply until they have completed their primary degree program.

Applying to the certificate program as a JHU graduate student

Students already enrolled in a graduate program at JHU are not required to submit the School's electronic admissions application, but prior to beginning coursework, must email a letter to the Certificate Program Contact outlining career objectives and how the CBPH certificate program will help achieve them.

Eligible Start Terms:

1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th

Non-Degree Students

This certificate program is only open to individuals who are currently matriculated in a degree program in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health or other divisions at the Johns Hopkins University.
