Kelly Doran, MD, MHS

Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, and Department of Population Health, NYU School of Medicine

Dr. Doran studies how health care systems can better address homelessness and other social determinants of health. She has been active in homelessness related work and research since working at a student-run homeless shelter as an undergraduate at Harvard College. Dr. Doran attended medical school at the University of Michigan, completed a residency in emergency medicine at NYU-Bellevue, and earned a master’s degree in health sciences as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar at Yale University. Dr. Doran’s research spans homelessness, housing, social determinants of health, substance use, frequent emergency department use, and high-cost patients and has been published in journals including the New England Journal of Medicine and American Journal of Public Health. She previously served as a Senior Advisor to the New York State Department of Health on an innovative program to use Medicaid to fund supportive housing. Her current research, funded by NIH/NIDA and the United Hospital Fund, will use linked administrative and patient-collected data to develop homelessness prevention screening tools for emergency department patients and to examine the effects of social determinants of health on health services use. Dr. Doran works clinically in the emergency department at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City.
