Sustainability
Sustainability and the reduction of our ecological footprint are priorities for the Bloomberg School.
Global climate change threatens the health of the planet and endangers all species. Because of this—and the inability of planetary resources to sustain our current habits and lifestyles—it is imperative that we weave an ecological consciousness into all of our activities including engagement, research, academics and operations.
Every student, employee, and alum bear the responsibility of environmental stewardship. With concerted efforts, we can make a world of difference.
The JHU Office of Sustainability is spearheading an effort to develop an updated Sustainability Plan, which will set university-wide goals and objectives until 2030 and lay the groundwork for longer-term goals beyond the decade.

The Office of Sustainability supports and coordinates the Sustainability Leadership Council (SLC). The SLC is a university-wide, independent, advisory body reporting to the Provost and JHU leadership. Over 100 faculty, staff, and students from across all university divisions serve on the SLC’s committees, and thirteen working groups. The School of Public Health is well represented on the SLC, with multiple members serving on each of the four SLC committees (academic, research).

Environmental Education
For those interested in pursuing sustainability-focused academics and research, the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering, with a cross-divisional affiliation between the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Whiting School of Engineering enables us to offer a range of interdisciplinary graduate programs at the intersection of public health and engineering. Students benefit from broad and deep expertise in areas ranging from the science of biological processes and environmental engineering to data analytics. Our interdisciplinary approach enables students to design a course of study that can be tailored to meet their specific career goals. Our graduates are leaders in academia and in the public and private sectors. Click here for more information on graduate degree programs in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering.

The Bloomberg School's MPH concentration in Global Environmental Sustainability and Health provides students with an understanding of how humans are impacting the earth. The concentration explores the main drivers of global environmental change (land use, energy use, food use, water use and population growth) and how they, in turn, threaten human health on local, regional and global scales. Students gain necessary skills to develop appropriate responses to these challenges through qualitative research methods and behavioral change interventions.
