PhD students and postdoctoral fellows are the engines driving laboratory research and discovery in a department like ours. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health recognize trainees with a number of annual awards. BMB Scholastic Achievement Awards

These four prizes, named after four pioneering faculty in our department, are awarded to PhD students and postdoctoral fellows for their accomplishments. Winners receive a cash award and present at the annual awards event.

The John Scocca Achievement Award recognizes excellence in laboratory research on the part of a PhD student.
The Lawrence Grossman Achievement Award recognizes excellence in laboratory research on the part of a postdoctoral fellow.
The Sharon Krag Achievement Award recognizes outstanding and impactful leadership on the part of a PhD student or postdoctoral fellow.
The Pierre Coulombe Travel Award recognizes and outstanding research discovery by PhD student or postdoctoral fellow and provides support to attend and present their work at a scientific conference.

Brian D. Crawford and Family Research Scholarship

This scholarship was established by BMB alumni Brian Crawford, PhD ’82, to recognize and celebrate excellence on the part of BMB trainees. The scholarship is awarded to PhD students in recognition of their achievements in academics, research, and service.

Roger McMacken Jr. Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor Roger McMacken, PhD, a former chair of BMB and long-time professor. The fund was created by alumni of the McMacken lab to recognize his deep commitment to graduate education. The scholarship recognizes PhD students for their achievements in academics, research, and service.

Elsa Orent Keiles Fellowship in Biochemistry

The Keiles fellowship was established in 1996 with a bequest from the estate of Elsa Orent Keiles, ScD ’25, a graduate of the Department, then called Chemical Hygiene. The award recognizes PhD students in the Department who excel in the classroom and in the lab and have distinguished themselves and provides a tuition benefit.

Frederik Bang Award

This award was established in memory of Frederik Bang, former chair of the Pathobiology Department, now known as Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. The award is run by MMI and recognizes students in the School of Public Heath who are engaged in doctoral research on a topic relevant to pathobiology.

Delta Omega Society

Delta Omega is a national honor society that aims to encourage excellence in research, scholarship, and practice among graduate students in public health and to recognize attainment in the field of public health. The Society accepts only students meeting high academic standards and membership criteria, who also demonstrate a potential for making significant contributions to the field of public health.
