Diversity Activities
The Bloomberg School is a community committed to sharing values of diversity and inclusion in order to achieve and sustain excellence.
We firmly believe that we can best promote excellence by recruiting and retaining a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff and by creating a climate of respect that is supportive of everyone’s success. This climate for diversity, inclusion, and excellence is critical to attaining the best research, scholarship, teaching, health care, and other strategic goals of the Department, the School, and the University.
The University assigns a high priority to the implementation of its equal opportunity policy, and significant University resources are devoted to assuring compliance with all laws prohibiting discrimination in employment and educational programs. Johns Hopkins University does not discriminate on the basis of gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status or other legally protected characteristic in any student program, activity administered by the University, admission or employment.
These values are recognized and supported fully by the leadership of Johns Hopkins institutions at all levels and in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. BMB is committed to creating an environment rich in diversity and invested in maintaining an atmosphere that embraces the diverse cultures of our academic community.
We have an active Diversity and Inclusion Committee which leads activities for the Department, such as our monthly Diversity and Donuts discussion series, as well as hosting larger events that bring in other departments. The Committee was formed in 2016, and was the first department diversity committee in the School of Public Health.
In addition to these events within the Johns Hopkins community, our outreach efforts include the following:
Meyerhoff Scholar Program
The Meyerhoff Scholars Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County is at the forefront of efforts to increase diversity among future leaders in science, technology, engineering and related fields. Our interactions with the program have included visits to UMBC to spend time with students interested in the various programs offered by BMB, and we have recruited UMBC students and Meyerhoff Scholars to our doctoral and master's programs. We have also participated in the School’s “Bridge Day,” a one-day visit to our campus for new students entering the Meyerhoff Scholar Program that includes scientific presentations, a tour of the school, interaction with current students and interaction with the students attending the diversity summer internship program.
Recruiting Outreach
BMB recruiting efforts include attending conference and recruiting fair, and we have made a priority to include forums that serve underrepresented students.
ABRCMS (Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students)
A national forum sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) that is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
McNair Scholars Program Recruitment Fairs
The McNair program is a federally funded initiative by the U.S. Department of Education that provides research opportunities and graduate school preparation for a select group of first generation/low-income and underrepresented ethnic minority college students.
SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science) National Diversity in STEM Conference
A multidisciplinary and multicultural conference, and the country’s largest STEM diversity event.
