Baltimore Week

Early every academic year, SOURCE hosts Baltimore Week—a celebration of the Baltimore community through a social justice lens. This year our series of activities will kick off on Sat, October 5 with our Fall Tri-School Day of Service and features panel discussions, mobile community classrooms, a film screening, and our Canned Food Donation Drive. Read more below and register for events today!

NOTE: Events are open to students, faculty and staff from the Schools of Public Health and Nursing, and M.D. candidates in years 1-4 from the School of Medicine, except when noted. Registration is required for all events.

 

Sat, October 5 | Fall Tri-School Day of Service

  • Times vary by project | Registration required | Transportation provided | Meet at BSPH
  • Join dozens of other volunteers from the Johns Hopkins Schools of Public Health, Nursing and Medicine for community service! SOURCE partner organizations have identified urgent projects, including opportunities with Commodore John Rodgers School, Amazing Grace Lutheran Church, and Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake!

 

Mon, October 7 | Start of SOURCE Canned Food Donation Drive

  • Donate non-perishable and unopened canned food to support SOURCE partnering organizations’ food pantries! Donations will be collected until Friday, October 18

Tue, October 8 | Panel, "Community Engagement: Dispelling Myths, Providing Tips"

  • 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. | SON Carpenter Room B | Pizza lunch provided for registered attendees
  • This panel discussion with SOURCE community partners, students, and faculty highlights ways to authentically and ethically engage with our Baltimore community, as well as a brief overview of SOURCE's justice-oriented work, programs, and service opportunities.

Wed, October 9 | "Taking Care: Portraits from Baltimore", Film Screening with Health Care for the Homeless

  • 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. | BSPH Room W5008 | Popcorn and light snacks served
  • Please join us to watch this year's original Health Care for the Homeless documentary, Taking Care: Portraits from Baltimore, directed by Baltimore filmmakers NIA JUNEKirby Griffin and APoetNamedNate. In the rhythm of everyday tasks like cooking, getting a haircut, and shopping, three individuals unearth the miracle in life's ordinary moments—moments that almost slipped away. This heartening documentary weaves together the lives of Larrice, Sandra, and Clayvon. Their journeys intersect at Health Care for the Homeless, sewing a tapestry of this community's unwavering determination to heal.

 

Fri, October 11 | Mobile Community Classroom

  • 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. 
  • You are invited to travel around East Baltimore on our SOURCE Mobile Community Classroom to learn more about our hyper-local community partner sites! Along the way, we will provide information about the history between JHU and East Baltimore, as well as issues impacting our East Baltimore community. We will be leaving from the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). The event will conclude with a debrief session with the facilitators in a classroom in the BSPH.
    *Open to BSPH and SON students only. 
    **Registration is required, as we have limited spots available on the bus. Participants must be available for the full 1.5-hour block of time.
