Faculty Initiatives

Development

Faculty development is paramount to fostering an environment of continuous growth and innovation within the Bloomberg School. By investing in the professional development of our faculty members, we empower them to excel in their roles as educators, researchers, and mentors.

Faculty Development Highlights

New Faculty Orientation

Our New Faculty Orientation is carefully crafted to introduce new faculty to the key aspects of the School and the support available. Orientation resources are also available to current faculty through pre-recorded orientation sessions.

As an integral part of this program, we extend invitations to meet-and-greet sessions with our Vice Dean for Faculty and the Dean of the School once a quarter. These gatherings provide a unique opportunity for new faculty members to engage with their peers and forge invaluable connections within our community.

Faculty Writing Accountability Groups

We encourage faculty to elevate their writing game with our Faculty Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs). Faculty across departments and ranks come together on a 10-week journey designed to strengthen their writing habits. With organizational support through the Faculty Office, faculty engage in weekly structured writing sessions that are crafted to maximize productivity, including goal-setting, dedicated writing time, and reflective wrap-ups—without peer review pressure. With group sizes capped at 4-8 members, faculty forge connections and make progress on writing priorities. Faculty benefit from heightened productivity, regular goal-setting, and a supportive community of peers. Invitations to join a WAG are shared in the summer and winter.

Early-Career Faculty Writing Retreats

The Faculty Office appreciates the critical importance of writing for professional impact and career success. We have recently launched biannual two-day, non-residential writing retreats, tailored specifically for early-career faculty members. Set against the backdrop of the renewing seasons of spring and fall, these immersive sessions are meticulously crafted to invigorate your writing pursuits.

Appointments and Promotions Board

The Appointments and Promotions Board is the guiding force behind our faculty's journey toward excellence. With dedicated subcommittees overseeing both Tenure Track and Research, Practice, Teaching, and Scientist appointments and promotions, we ensure meticulous rigor and advocacy for each candidate. Our mission? To uphold the highest standards of research, teaching, and service, while aligning appointments and promotions with the present and future needs of our School. We're committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, ensuring that affirmative action and equal employment opportunities are not just met but exceeded.

Faculty Leadership Program

The significance of public health leadership in our society has never been more pronounced than it is today. The multifaceted nature of the public health challenges we confront demands leaders with diverse backgrounds, along with the expertise and training necessary to address them effectively. The Bloomberg School has introduced a novel cohort-based leadership program tailored to support mid-career faculty members in advancing their interests and potential to become future leaders in public health. One of its primary objectives is to enhance diversity and foster a range of backgrounds among public health leaders, aligning with the School's commitment to the principles of IDARE.

This program aims to:

  • Employ a problem-solving and case-based approach to develop leadership and communication skills.
  • Facilitate networking opportunities with leaders and peers within the School and across the University.
  • Consist of monthly half-day collaborative sessions conducted over a 10-month period.
  • Empower participants to apply newly acquired skills to address specific leadership challenges they encounter.
  • Offer activities designed to assist participants in identifying and nurturing mentor relationships.
The Provost’s Leadership, Advancement, and Development Academy

The JHU Provost’s Leadership, Advancement & Development Academy is committed to nurturing the academic and leadership development of Johns Hopkins University faculty at every stage of their careers. The program aims to enrich established faculty development programs and introduce customized leadership development initiatives for individuals in the leadership pipeline, fostering widespread benefits throughout the academic community with an array of enhanced professional development opportunities.

The Academy at Johns Hopkins

Celebrating the wisdom, intelligence, and experience of our retired faculty, the Academy involves retired members in the vibrant Johns Hopkins community. Through meaningful engagement, the Academy seeks to harness the wealth of knowledge of our retired and emeritus faculty, with a goal of enriching the experiences of the students, patients, disciplines, and institution, while also nurturing all faculty’s continued professional fulfillment.

Engagement

At the Bloomberg School, we are committed to fostering an engaging environment for our faculty colleagues. Through initiatives that empower every faculty member to contribute, we ensure that everyone has a voice in the strategic advancement of the School.

Faculty Engagement Highlights

Faculty Diversity Initiative

Diversity and inclusion are fundamental to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Diversity Initiative of promoting health and reducing inequality locally and around the world.  Our commitment to diversity and inclusion means attracting exceptionally talented faculty from a breadth of backgrounds and experiences and sustaining a campus culture where all faculty can be successful.

Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate of the Bloomberg School of Public Health plays a pivotal role in shaping the direction and governance of the School and the University. Serving as a formal platform for communication among faculty, students, and administration, it ensures that faculty voices are heard and valued. Through raising and deliberating on pertinent issues, the Senate acts as a bridge between departments and School leadership, providing vital input into key decision-making bodies. With its cross-disciplinary nature, the Senate offers a diverse perspective on emergent issues and policy proposals, fostering collaboration and innovation across departments.
