Policies to Reduce Gun Violence in Michigan

Though Michigan has made substantial progress in passing policies to prevent gun violence in the state, there are still pathways forward to better protect their individuals and communities from firearm-related harms. We recognize that firearm policy does not work in a vacuum, and other types of interventions, such as specific public health programs, are needed to comprehensively address gun violence in Michigan. While these recommendations are not an exhaustive list, enacting these evidence-based policies will help to reduce the burden of gun violence in Michigan. Michigan

An Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) is a civil court order that temporarily restricts firearm access for an individual who is behaving dangerously or is at high risk of harm to themselves or others. In Michigan, law enforcement, family and household members (including current or former dating partners), persons with a child with the respondent, guardians, and certain health care providers can petition for an ERPO.
