Eligibility and Membership
Each candidate must meet membership criteria as set forth in the constitution and bylaws.
The Society only accepts students meeting high academic standards. All candidates must also demonstrate a potential for making significant contributions to the field of public health.
The Delta Omega Alpha Chapter selects Bloomberg School students, alumni, and faculty for membership each year.
The Chapter may annually induct a maximum of:
- 10% of the student graduating class
- 10% alumni
- 3% of the full-time faculty
Students
Only students in the top 25% of the graduating class are eligible for membership.
The Chapter sends a letter to students informing them that they are eligible for memberships and asking for two nomination letters of support. One letter must be from a Bloomberg School faculty member. The second may be from any Johns Hopkins faculty. Students must also submit a self statement of less than 250 words.
The Delta Omega Alpha Chapter Student Nomination Committee reviews all materials to determine which students demonstrate current or potential qualities of outstanding leadership in public health.
Faculty and Alumni
Alumni
Eligible alumni are those whose degrees are at least five years old.
Eligible alumni are nominated by other Delta Omega Alpha Chapter members for membership.
The Delta Omega Alpha Chapter Alumni Nomination Committee reviews all nominations and selects alumni whose work in the practice of public health would serve as a model for future graduates of the School.
Faculty
Bloomberg School faculty members are selected for membership by the Delta Omega Alpha Chapter Faculty Nomination Committee.
The Committee accepts nominations from department chairs and other Delta Omega Alpha Chapter members. The committee pays particular attention to outstanding public health performance in scholarship, teaching, research, and the quality of publications.
Dues
The Delta Omega Alpha Chapter has induction and annual or lifetime dues.
Induction dues are a one-time payment of $60 upon induction to the Delta Omega National Council. These dues cover the expense of processing each new member's standing in the Society and membership for the first year. Individuals must pay the induction fee to be inducted into Delta Omega.
Annual dues are paid once per year by all members of the Delta Omega Alpha Chapter and are currently $50*. These dues are paid to the Chapter to provide financial support to facilitate scientific activities and to recognize students with scholarship awards and research support.
*The Chapter's Executive Board determines the amount of annual dues.
In lieu of annual dues, members may also make a one-time payment of $750. These payments go directly to the Delta Omega Alpha Chapter Scholarship Endowment.
