Johns Hopkins Cancer Epidemiologist Elected as AAAS Fellow

Elizabeth A. Platz, ScD, professor and deputy chair of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, has been elected as a 2019 Fellow of the American  Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her contributions to the understanding of the roles of genetics, epigenetics, and environmental factors in cancer epidemiology. Platz’s research focuses on the use of molecular and genetic epidemiology approaches to understand the mechanisms underlying prostate incidence and progression. She is at the forefront of epidemiologic research on the role of inflammation, a target for prevention, in the development of prostate cancer, and on telomere length as a prognostic marker for poor outcome after treatment for prostate cancer. 

Fellows are elected each year by their peers serving on the Council of AAAS, the organization’s member-run governing body. Platz joins 400 AAAS members who have been elected to the rank of Fellow in 2019 and will receive official certificates and rosette pins in gold and blue (symbolizing science and engineering) at the AAAS Annual Meeting in Seattle on February 15, 2020.
