Household transmission study of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses in families with children <5 years of age in Maryland (SEARCh)

Challenge

While children are clearly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and can transmit the virus to others, relatively few studies have focused on disease characteristics, risk factors for infection such as daycare attendance and patterns of transmission among the youngest children 0-4 years of age. SARS CoV-2 Epidemiology And Response in Children (SEARCh) is a CDC-funded, Baltimore area, prospective, longitudinal cohort study of SARS-CoV-2 surveillance in households with children 0-4 years of age.

Approach

Advancing Health Literacy to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 seeks to build health literacy amongst youth through school and community-based programs. IVAC is conducting listening sessions with community partners and the community to identify approaches to best improve health literacy. It is also developing training modules on critical thinking and analysis to support organizations’ efforts in improving health literacy and working with community members that are hesitant or distrustful.

Results

IVAC provided materials and trainings to community-based partners, and organized listening sessions to help identify the program’s needs.
