Dr. Paul Gaist is a professor (adjunct) at the JHU Bloomberg School of Public Health with joint appointments in the Departments of Epidemiology; Health Policy and Management; and, Health, Behavior and Society. He is a health scientist administrator in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health. His PhD and MPH are both from JHU and are in behavioral sciences and health education, and health policy and management, respectively. He also has degrees in psychology and physiology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Previously in his career, he was a researcher at the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), program director for the Psychobiology Branch of the NIMH, the deputy director for HIV/AIDS for the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, Mental Health Administration, and a senior health advisor at the White House National AIDS Program Office.

Dr. Gaist teaches two courses during the year:

1) A New View: Improving Public Health through Innovative Social and Behavioral Tools and Approaches (410.614.11; HBS Summer Institute - June of each year; 4 credits). This course satisfies the behavioral requirement for the MPH.

2) The Role of CBOs and NGOs in Improving Global Public Health (301.692.51; HPM Winter Institute - January of each year; 3 credits).

He previously also taught the course, Psychosocial Factors of Health and Illness (HBS Summer Institute).
