Experiences & Accomplishments
Mia Aassar is a core faculty member for the Center for Injury Research and Policy. She uses qualitative methods to implement and evaluate evidence-based programs and policies that reduce the burden of injury. Her research interests include firearm violence prevention, community-based participatory research, health communication and advocacy, and health equity, particularly among LGBTQ+ youth and people of color.
Prior to working at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Mia served as a Program Consultant for the Anne Arundel County Department of Health's Gun Violence Intervention Team. She has also been a Field Manager for Grassroots Campaigns, a national organizing firm specializing in designing and implementing innovative and data-driven face-to-face canvassing and field campaigns for progressive groups, candidates, and charitable organizations. There she managed teams of three to five canvassers and engage directly with members of the public in order to raise awareness and funds in support of progressive clients.
In 2019, she worked at the Center for American Press, where she compiled updates from the Federal Register on local, state, and federal regulatory developments affecting the LGBTQ+ community and communicated the developments weekly to a listserv of LGBTQ-serving organizations. Additionally, she assisted with designing a survey for Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System coordinators at the CDC to collect data on the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity questions in public health surveys.
