Overview

As an engineer, food scientist, and public health expert, Matti Marklund has a diverse research portfolio focused on the health and economic impacts of food policies and other public health interventions, nutritional epidemiology, and dietary assessment.

Over the past 16 years, Matti has advanced the field of cardiovascular epidemiology and public health nutrition. His research, supported by randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and systematic reviews, has contributed to global understanding of diet-disease relationships, particularly in the context of dietary fat and carbohydrate quality. Since 2021, Matti has secured five research grants as principal investigator to lead studies assessing the health impact and cost-effectiveness of food policies in diverse settings. 

His publication record includes over 80 peer-reviewed articles, with more than 50 published since 2020, and many in top-tier journals like BMJ, Circulation, and JAMA Internal Medicine. His work has been cited over 3,000 times and referenced in 25 policy documents from major organizations such as WHO and the World Bank. His research has also garnered significant global news coverage.

Matti Marklund received his MSc in Engineering Biotechnology from Umeå University and his PhD in Food Science from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. He completed post-doctoral training at Tufts University and Uppsala University, and currently serves as an Assistant Professor in Human Nutrition at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He also holds appointments at The George Institute for Global Health in Australia and Uppsala University in Sweden.
