Overview
I began my career in laboratory research at the University of Maryland for 13 years before moving to the UM Department of Epidemiology as a Program Manager under Dr. Ellen Silbergeld. I was part of Dr. Silbergeld’s team that transferred to Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in January 2002. In my time at Hopkins, I have worked with a number of faculty on a variety of research projects, including Dr. Lynn R. Goldman, MD, MPH (now dean of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University), Robert S. Lawrence, MD (Professor and former director of the Center for a Livable Future), Dr. Ana Navas Acien, PhD (now Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health) and others. I managed many community based research projects, overseeing the organizational complexities for those, all the way through to finalizing data analyses. We were among the first researchers to conduct epidemiological studies among US farmers and workers in slaughterhouses which demonstrated that use of antimicrobial drugs in animal feeds is a significant driver for the selection of drug resistance in human pathogens. I was the coordinator for a Fogarty training grant on non-communicable disease in Mongolia, which trained master’s students, visiting researchers and short term scholars. I am well versed in both pre and post award grant details, and assist faculty grant writing, budget preparation, management of staff and finances for projects, data evaluation and manuscript preparation, all in an effort to support the mission of the department, school and faculty with whom I work.
