Community Engagement and Outreach
Internship Programs
The Meyerhoff Scholars Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) as well as the JHSPH Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP) are longterm partners in MMI's community outreach activities. Over the years, many outstanding undergraduate students from Baltimore, Baltimore County and all over the United States have contributed and tremendously enriched countless research projects in our laboratory groups, and we warmly welcome applications from our interns into the MMI graduate programs.
Civic Engagement
Through innovative teaching we are integrating IDARE values into our graduate education programs and beyond. Among our community engagement efforts are student and faculty initiatives to support local high schools, such as the Commodore John Rogers School or the Baltimore Polytech Institute, in their instructional and and learner assessment efforts. Moreover, with support from JHU SOURCE and MMI's R3 Center for Innovation in Science Education, we partner with local community organizations to develop and teach novel service-learning formats that allow our students to meaningfully contribute to the Baltimore community through civic engagement projects in an online environment.
MMI'S Science Showcase
Interested in historic and contemporary stories about science? In collaboration with JHU SOURCE, librarians and historians from the JH Schools of Public Health and Medicine, MMI's R3 Center for Innovation in Science Education (R3ISE) invites interested volunteers to help compose a collection of facts and stories about the contributions of underrepresented groups to science. Results will be displayed on the R3ISE and MMI Department websites, and also published at a later point.
