Description
Introduces students to subfields of bioethics and related scholarship that concern key aspects of embodiment, such as gender, gender identity, and sexuality. Explores central ideas, theories, and critiques of bioethics from these subfields of bioethics. Provides students with the opportunity to apply these ideas and theories to specific ethical issues and to consider how these critical perspectives enrich bioethics.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Articulate key theories and ideas from subfields of bioethics related to embodiment
  2. Articulate critiques of bioethics from subfields of bioethics including feminist bioethics and queer bioethics
  3. Identify how key theories and critiques from feminist bioethics and queer bioethics apply to bioethical issues related to gender, gender identity and sexuality
  4. Apply critiques from subfields of bioethics to bioethics as a field
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 30% Discussion Board
  • 20% Midterm Paper
  • 30% Final Paper
  • 20% Group Presentation
