Are you curious as to how scientists assist with matters of diplomacy?
Are you intrigued by the idea of scientific collaborations with diplomatically problematic countries helping to progress both scientific and diplomatic efforts?
Do you want to learn more from scientists who have been able to aid diplomatic efforts?
Introduces the exciting field of science diplomacy. Discusses examples of science diplomacy in action with lectures from scientists with experience, utilizing Dr. Peter Agre’s book as a framework. Focuses on science diplomacy with nations with strained relations to the US, such as Cuba, DPRK, Iran, and others. Concludes with the application of course ideas to current diplomatic issues.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Describe the tenets of science diplomacy
- Discuss how the readings and the speakers exemplify science diplomacy in action
- Apply principles of science diplomacy to current and potential future issues

This course is evaluated as follows:
- 60% Participation
- 40% Final Paper
