Description
Public health problems are identified, evidenced is assessed, and policy strategies proposed, but how does the policy process play out in actuality? This course will provide students with an inside look at the Maryland legislative session. Students will follow the trajectory of selected public health legislation through all steps of the legislative process and gain insights from those directly engaged to gain insights on the key factors that shape policy debates and outcomes.
Follows key public health legislation throughout all steps of the Maryland legislative session to foster student learning about how the process works and key factors that impact policy debates and outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Cite and explain key factors that shape the debate on current policy issues
  2. Analyze opportunities for action and potential objections to change
  3. Examine the state legislative landscape to identify ways to create more meaningful opportunities for change

This course is evaluated as follows:
  • 30% Participation
  • 30% Discussion leader
  • 40% Final Paper
