Description
Provides an overview of selected, timely policy issues related to women’s health in both developed and developing countries. Covers the history of selected policy concerns, frameworks for viewing these concerns, and specific policies related to women’s health issues such as family planning, gender-based violence, welfare reform, employment and workplace conditions, and disabilities. Changes topics yearly depending on the primacy of the topic or issue.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss aspects of the policy-making process and apply a general policy orientation to women’s health and definitions of women’s health in current use
  2. Describe and apply a gender justice framework for evaluating women’s health policies and their impact on health and health equity in developed and developing countries
  3. Describe and apply a policy lens to topics such as work and employment, family planning, disability, gender-based violence, and special populations in developing and developed countries
  4. Describe and apply an understanding of varying stakeholder’s perspectives on current and critical issues pertaining to women’s health policy
  5. Discuss multiple dimensions of the policy-making process, including the roles of ethics and evidence
  6. Evaluate policies for their impact on public health and health equity
