Prerequisite
PhD students and postdocs should gain experience in grant writing as part of professional development.
The ability to fund your training through a fellowship award will boost your training experience and credentials.
Fellowship applications are more than just a research proposal and it is important to learn all aspects that go into assembling the application as well as the review process.
Provides students and postdoc trainees with an overview of the entire fellowship application process, including how to write an effective research proposal and specific aims, how to prepare a NIH-style biosketch, and how to formulate an effective personal biography. Discusses the peer review process, and how fellowship applications are judged and scored. Gathers the students and postdocs to form an in-class study section where trainees have the opportunity to review grants in the style of NIH study sections.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Assemble a research proposal appropriate for a NIH style fellowship application (F31 or F32)
- Prepare an effective NIH style biosketch
- Write an effective specific aims page
- Review research grants of peers
- Apply available search tools to identify appropriate funding sources for both national and international trainees
