Description
The best way to learn about qualitative research is to actually do a qualitative research study from start to finish.
Enables students to complete data collection, analysis and write-up of results from a qualitative research project in collaboration with a local community-based organization or JHU faculty. Discusses common challenges in qualitative research including analysis of qualitative data, writing qualitative papers and reports, presenting qualitative findings, and ethical issues related to fieldwork and authorship.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Analyze qualitative data and identify strategies to overcome challenges in analyzing data
  2. Write up findings from a qualitative research project and interpret findings in the context of the broader structural and social issues in the community
  3. Demonstrate effective communication and presentation skills, as well as how to give and receive constructive feedback from peers and community partners
  4. Work collaboratively and integrate perspectives from other sectors and/or professions to interpret qualitative data and give recommendations to key stakeholders to promote and advance population health
  5. Choose and apply context-appropriate inductive and deductive qualitative data analysis methodologies to qualitative data sets, manage and interpret qualitative data, and present findings in audience-appropriate formats to collaborating community partner

  • 50% Final Paper
  • 15% Final Presentation
  • 15% Data Collection Assignment
  • 20% Participation
