Focuses on the clinical applications of biomaterials as medical devices: (1) to repair, replace organs and tissues; and (2) to deliver drugs, growth factors and other agents to stimulate, enhance, and restore function. Covers biomaterials used in clinical settings such as orthopedics, cardiovascular, dental, neurological and reconstructive/cosmetic surgery. Discusses chemical, physical and mechanical properties of currently used, new and novel biomaterials being developed that determine success or failure. Identify biological responses (immune and non-immune) that determine the fate of biomaterial medical devices. Provides state of the art information on public health concerns with respect to the use of biomaterials in medicine.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify biomaterials used for tissue regeneration, repair, or replacement and as delivery systems for restoration of function
- Explain tissue, organ, system response (non-immune, immune) to biomaterial medical devices
- Discuss regulatory issues for public health safety with the use of standard and new biomaterial compositions and combination devices
