Description
You know the public health problem, determined the most feasible, evidence-based policy strategies, but how do you get policymakers to advance your solutions? Despite turbulent political dynamics, facts do matter, but you must have sophisticated knowledge and skills for strategically presenting your information in order to have the greatest impact. This course will provide you with the tools and hone your ability to effectively elevate public health perspectives, research, and information in legislative and regulatory decision-making processes.
Provides policy researchers with a set of analytical frameworks to gain a greater understanding of policy issues. Explores all aspects of a topical policy issue from its origins, transformations, and impact on health and social justice. Determines policy topics each year according to faculty interest, student needs, and policy saliency. Uses case studies, policy analysis readings, and discussions to foster student learning. Focuses directly on translating policy research into policy alternatives while others focus on the political and social environment.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify complex problems and recognize priority issues by using a policy analysis lens.
  2. Cite and explain the key factors that shape the debate on current policy issues
  3. Demonstrate application of policy literacy
  4. Identify social, cultural, economic, commercial and institutional factors that promote or hinder the design and implementation of public policies
  5. Employ policy analysis tools to current public issues to create more meaningful opportunities for change
  6. Analyze opportunities for action and potential objections to change
