183.631 Fundamentals of Human Physiology or consent of instructor; ME 360.720 - Physiology, recommended
Focuses on reflex control of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Discusses the various receptors, central integration, and effector mechanisms of the two systems, and examines their roles under resting and stressful conditions, e.g., factors involved in respiratory rhythmicity at rest, cardiopulmonary acclimatization to altitude, and adaptation to hemorrhage. Blends didactic material with student-led discussion of pertinent journal articles and monographic literature.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify and explain at least on a basic level the role of the various receptors, afferent pathways, centers, and efferent pathways to the effectors of the cardiopulmonary control system, in both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
- Explain in detail several examples of the interaction between the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems
- Demonstrate the effect of anesthesia on the control of the cardiopulmonary system’s response to stimuli (e.g., hypoxia)
