Enables doctoral students to attain skills in writing successful funding proposals—that is, proposals that are likely to receive approval for funding. Introduces students to grant writing, funding sources, types of NIH grants, how to read an RFA, PA or other announcements, and develop a biosketch. Explores the requirements of a successful NIH style grant proposal.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify the appropriate grant mechanism for his or her idea
- Analyze and interpret Requests For Applications (RFAs)
- Distinguish the appropriate study sections for submissions
- Ascertain scoring systems and review processes for a variety of proposals
- Construct an F31 Proposal in the requested format
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
- 20% Assignments
- 70% Grant Submission
- 10% Participation
