Description
Uses case studies, a simulation, and group-based activities, supplemented by required weekly online lectures and readings, students explore a variety of settings found in low and middle-income countries in which to apply management concepts. Examines: (1) organizational restructuring in response to decentralization, (2) environmental scanning ,(3) systems behavior in hospital organizations, (4) multiple approaches to group decision making, (5) managing to achieve agreement in health organizations, (6) preparing, implementing, and communicating a budget that is based on limited resources within a business, (7) performance improvement concepts and tools in a healthcare organization, and (8) the construct of a “balanced score card” for a health organization. Applies these concepts to the activities and assignments in this management skills learning lab.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  1. Collaborate effectively in teams to tackle problems faced by managers in health organizations
  2. Apply SWOT analysis to evaluate the environmental and organizational factors influencing an organizational change
  3. Apply communication and collaboration skills effectively in addressing organizational systems issues
  4. Apply strategies to identify stakeholders and build coalitions and partnerships
  5. Use quality improvement and systems thinking tools to analyze and resolve operational problems
  6. Apply basic principles and tools of budgeting, including developing a budget based on information regarding service volume, staffing levels, salary rates, and supply usage and costs
  7. Articulate the metrics required to create a balanced scorecard to monitor organizational performance

No undergraduates. Experience working in the health sector in LMICs required for students not in IH

Consent required for all students by emailing Cristina Salazar (csalazar@jhu.edu). Preference given to students in the MSPH GDEC, Health Systems, SBI, and PHD in Health Systems programs. Interested student outside the above-mentioned programs must email requesting permission stating relevant experience and day/time they want to enroll in. Space is limited and not guaranteed. Class meets in person.
