Introduces students to some of the many contemporary communication issues that affect the health of the public. Addresses topics such as mis- and disinformation, interpersonal communication within the context of medical encounters, the use of story-telling and entertainment as educational strategies; the role of news media in covering health topics; social marketing and social media.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify at least three different health communication approaches used to influence the health of the public
- Assess the relationship between patient-centered communication and patient outcomes
- Describe the role of story-telling and news media on public knowledge, attitudes and behaviors relevant to individual and community health issues
- Identify commercial marketing strategies used to influence consumer behavior
- Explain the role of social marketing, advocacy and regulation in diminishing the impact of commercial marketing of unhealthy products
Methods of Assessment
This course is evaluated as follows:
- 25% Participation
- 75% Discussion Board
