Are you keen to understand why certain organizations thrive and excel in their performance (financial, human, health) over time in low- and middle-income settings despite resource constraints and economic downturns?
Are there evidence-based models and frameworks that leaders can use and adapt to drive performance at all levels? What ground work is needed to elevate organizational performance?
Provides an understanding of the core features, characteristics, systems and processes adopted by organizations that lead to high performance in LMIC settings. Introduces the Baldrige Performance Excellence Framework in Healthcare and utilizes a case study approach to share organizational best practices in setting standards, building robust processes and creating a culture of continuous improvement and excellence. Includes a contextual and cultural understanding of the LMIC settings that act as facilitators and/or barriers for high performance in LMIC settings.
Learning Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
- Identify major external forces shaping missions and managerial challenges for various health care institutions, and the foundations of high performing organizations (cultural, operational and strategic excellence) in LMIC settings
- Use the Baldridge Performance Excellence Framework in Healthcare to manage high performing organizations
- Explain the role of leadership in developing core values and concepts in HCOs
- Recognize and critique best practices in leadership and governance, work force development, information and knowledge management, operations, strategic planning and maintaining a strong customer focus
- Assess the role and utility of performance enhancement approaches and the facilitators and barriers to implementation of best practices in LMIC settings
- Apply and evaluate characteristics, beliefs, and behaviors found in high-performing organizations in LMIC settings

- 50% Final Paper
