The Bloomberg School’s new MPH students get oriented.
Their classes haven’t begun yet—and won’t until Wednesday, July 2—but for the School’s new MPH students, these first couple days will rank among the busiest of the 11-month degree program.
From today’s 8 a.m. breakfast, ID-badge photo session and meetings with faculty and student affairs staff, to tomorrow evening’s ice cream social, members of the school’s 96th MPH class, are booked solid.
This dynamic two-day orientation introduces students to the school, said MPH program chair Marie Diener-West, PhD, by giving them “… an opportunity to meet and socialize right away with fellow students, alumni, faculty and staff.”
The class of 2015 is 62 percent women, 35 percent physicians and 16 percent medical students. The student body also includes dentists, pharmacists, nurses, physical therapists, teachers and public health administrators. They hail from the U.S. and 36 countries
One of the first items on the orientation agenda for the 260-member class was an official welcome from Dean Michael J. Klag, MD, and MPH alum, class of 1987. Recalling his own experience, he promised students that they are embarking on a life-changing year.
“You will change the way you look at problems and think of solutions,” he said. “I’ve never had anyone come back to me and say it’s not true.
“So sit down, buckle up and get ready.”
