Will Provide Free Bike Helmets and Safety Tips to Community
Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Baltimore First Department reached 35,000+ in community since 2004
Celebrating a decade of keeping communities safe through community education, the Children ARE Safe (CARES) Mobile Safety Center—in collaboration with the Y of Central Maryland, Bike Maryland, and the Baltimore City Fire Department—will host to the CARES Safety Center 10th Anniversary and Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 31, at 10 a.m. at the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Family Center YMCA at 900 33rd Street.
Beginning at 10 a.m., festivities for registered attendees—comprised of Waverly Elementary School students and Y of Central Maryland Before and After School Program children—include a bike rodeo, safety activities, and family-friendly games. Each student will receive a free bike helmet, learn how to properly wear it, and have the chance to practice a variety of bike safety skills using bicycles provided by Bike Maryland. Children and their families also will tour the mobile safety center and visit a number of other safety stations.
“We at the Center for Injury Research and Policy are so happy to celebrate 10 years of spreading awareness with the Baltimore community,” said Andrea Gielen, Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy. “Since 2004, the CARES Mobile Safety Center has reached more than 35,000 visitors across area schools, health centers, and other community events.”
