New master's and doctoral students arrive for orientation activities.

Image removed.Dean Michael J. Klag turned history professor for a few brief moments yesterday to welcome incoming master’s and doctoral students to the Bloomberg School community for the 2013-14 academic year.

“To understand institutions you need to understand who founded them and who leads them now,” Klag told the approximately 250 students on campus for orientation in the departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Environmental Health Sciences; Epidemiology; Health, Behavior and Society; and International Health.

“The dream of William Henry Welch was to establish a research institution to keep people healthy,” he said, referring to the School’s founding dean.

The principles that Welch established in 1916—international scope and a focus on research as well as mentorship and teaching—continue to guide this School’s mission, Klag said.

“Prevention, population, outcomes: That’s what we do,” he told students before they set out for a full day of meetings with academic advisors and department chairs, information sessions and get-acquainted gatherings.

Orientation continues today for the estimated 200 students in the departments of Health Policy and Management; Mental Health; Molecular Microbiology and Immunology; and Population, Family and Reproductive Health.

On students’ calendars for next week are a student activities fair, a mixer and welcome receptions.
