Donald Steinwachs Honored at AcademyHealth’s Annual Research Meeting

Donald Steinwachs, PhD, Health Policy and Management professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, received AcademyHealth’s Distinguished Investigator Award at the organization’s Annual Research Meeting in Baltimore, Md.
The Distinguished Investigator Award honors individuals who have made a significant and long-lasting contribution to the field of health services research, leaders and role models in the field.

Steinwachs was recognized for his distinguished tenure at the Bloomberg School where he has served as a teacher, guide and mentor for students and young faculty alike, while pursuing a well-regarded research career. He was instrumental in the creation of AcademyHealth and its success as an influential voice for health services research and health policy.

Steinwachs’ research has focused on improving medical effectiveness and patient outcomes, using management information systems to monitor quality of care, examining the impact of financing alternatives on cost and quality, and health system performance. He has also worked to understand effective methods for increasing adherence to evidence-based practice and identifying patterns of care associated with improved outcomes for chronic diseases. In addition to his career at Johns Hopkins, Steinwachs was past President of the Association for Health Services Research and is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. He has served as a consultant to federal agencies and private foundations; and served on the board of directors of Mathematica, Inc., AcademyHealth, and Coalition for Health Services Research, Foundation for Accountability and the Consortium for Public Health Data Standards.

The award was presented by Karen Davis, PhD, the Eugene and Mildred Lipitz Professor and director of the Roger C. Lipitz Center for Integrated Health Care at the Bloomberg School. Davis was also a previous recipient of the award.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of AcademyHealth’s Annual Research Meeting and its largest attendance ever, with over 2,600 participants. A highlight included the unveiling of a five-foot timeline display depicting milestones of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Services and Outcomes Research from 1969 to the present.
