Bloomberg School Marks National Public Health Week
April 1-7 is National Public Health Week. This year’s theme explores “Return on Investment” and the benefit public health has on our lives every day both in the U.S. and around the world. To celebrate Public Health Week, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will host a series of events and special programs at the school.
Monday, April 1
To kick off National Public Health Week, the Bloomberg School of Public Health will unveil a special video presentation highlighting the impact and importance of public health. The presentation will feature photos from around the world focusing on the week’s themes and will be shown on the School’s “Wall of Wonder” video monitor.
The latest episode of the Bloomberg School’s monthly podcast, Public Health on the Inside, will focus on obesity in America. Sara Bleich, discusses the return on investment from public heath interventions aimed at curbing the obesity epidemic. The podcast is accessible at http://www.jhsph.edu/podcast.
Tuesday, April 2
Faculty from Jhpiego, an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University, will give a presentation on some of the low-cost, life-saving interventions it has helped develop over the last 40 years.
April 2 is also World Autism Awareness Day. The Bloomberg School will mark World Autism Awareness Day by lighting our building blue. Faculty, staff and students are also encouraged to wear blue that day to show their support. Wednesday, April 3
Nils Daulaire, Assistant Secretary for Global Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, will reflect on his career in public health. April 3 is also, Global Health Day. Following the talk, Bloomberg School students will also present summaries of their international research projects. This event was organized by the Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health.
On that day at noon, Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels will be present to recognize exceptional Johns Hopkins faculty who have mentored students through their student international learning experience.
Thursday, April 4
Faculty from the Bloomberg School will host a panel discussion on the global challenges to mental health.
Friday, April 5
Students from the Bloomberg School’s African Public Health Network will give a presentation on the “brain drain” from Africa and discuss its implications for public health.
Faculty and staff from the Bloomberg School’s Center for Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) will be participating in the 16th conference in the Alcohol Policy series, known as AP-16. The conference, to be held in Arlington, Va., will explore progress in advancing alcohol policies at the local, regional, national and international levels. CAMY director David Jernigan is moderating the closing session of A-16. CAMY is a co-sponsor of National Public Health Week with APHA, and will be partnering with APHA to increase awareness of the remarks delivered during the closing session via social media under the NPHW platform.
