A Matter of Degrees

Published

A few of the newest grads reveal what sets the Bloomberg School cap, tassel and shoulders above the rest.

Yeny Tinoco, DVM, traveled from South America with her mother and sisters to attend convocation where she received a PhD in International Health.

"This accomplishment wouldn’t be possible without God´s favor and the support of my family, professors and friends,” said Tinoco, a research scientist who studies flu and other respiratory viruses in Peru.

Isabel Rodriguez-Barraquer, who pursued a PhD in Epidemiology and concurrent MHS in Biostatistics, studied dengue in Thailand, India and Brazil, analyzing methods to estimate the proportion of the population that needs to be vaccinated to control transmission.

“The breadth of opportunities, multi-disciplinarity, and scientific diversity make Hopkins a wonderful place to be," she said.

Kevin Kensler

Unmistakable amidst a sea of beaming parents were those of Kevin Kensler: Both appeared on stage in full regalia to celebrate their son’s Master of Health Science in Health Economics. Kensler’s mother, Nancy Davidson, MD, is an adjunct professor in the School of Medicine, and his father, Thomas Kensler, PhD, is a professor in Environmental Health Sciences. (It was a bit of a déjà vu moment, as all were present in 2010 when Kevin’s sister Caroline received an MHS in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control.)

“My mother and father have had tremendous careers in public health and I am glad that they can join my classmates and me as we celebrate our accomplishments,” said Kensler.
