CDC Official Commends Injury Center on its Anniversary

Published

On March 6, Linda Degutis, director of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), described what the agency is doing to address injury and violence in the United States and abroad to a crowded room of public health students, staff and faculty at the Bloomberg School. Her talk was part of a special seminar series sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy on the occasion of the Center’s 25th anniversary. The Center is one of 11 federally funded injury control research centers in the United States.

Degutis’s talk, “Injury and Violence Prevention: The Public Health Achievement of the Decade,” focused on priority areas for NCIPC, which include motor vehicle injury, prescription drug overdoses, traumatic brain injury and violence against children. Degutis also praised the Center’s long-standing commitment to translating research into practice and policy, a theme of a new video on the Center produced for its 25th anniversary which premiered immediately before her remarks.

In addition to the seminar series and video, the Center is planning a number of special events and projects to take place throughout the year, including raising money for the Susan P. Baker Scholarship in Injury Prevention and Control. Professor Baker is the Center’s founding director and has played a pivotal role in establishing injury prevention and control as a scientific discipline.
