On September 14, the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health will honor the Rebuild Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., with a Community Hero Award in recognition of the program’s innovation and success in improving the lives of trauma survivors. Daniel S. Stanto, MSW, LCSW, Rebuild program coordinator, will be accepting the award on behalf of the program.
Renan Castillo, PhD, assistant professor with the Injury Center, will present the award. Dr. Castillo is the principal investigator of an evaluation of the Trauma Survivors Network, a national resource for trauma survivors and their families modeled after the Rebuild program. Rebuild’s founder, Anna Bradford, MSW, LCWS, will discuss how the program helps trauma survivors and their families cope with life after serious injury. She will be followed by several active program participants who will share their experiences with the Rebuild program, including:
• Robert Baldassari, who was involved in a high-speed, head-on collision in 1991 with his two sons in the car.
• Randy Kuklis, a multiple gunshot survivor whose wounds penetrated the right hand, left arm, lung, stomach, bladder and intestinal tract.
• Eileen Jaeger, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2001 as a result of being struck by a truck that ran a red light. She will be joined by her husband Michael.
The program currently offers five different support groups for patients recovering from general trauma, spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury, in addition to patient-focused training for healthcare professionals to reinforce their vital role in the healing process. Research strongly suggests post-trauma outcomes are improved when patients and their families have access to peer-support programs.
