Chad Boult Named Senior Adviser to New Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation

Chad Boult, MD, MPH, MBA, the Eugene and Mildred Lipitz Professor of Public Health and director of the Roger C. Lipitz Center for Integrated Health Care at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has been named senior adviser for Geriatrics and Long-Term Care by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for its new Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (Innovation Center). Created by the Affordable Care Act of 2010, the Innovation Center will examine new ways of delivering health care and paying health care providers that can improve the quality of care and Americans’ health, while saving money for Medicare and Medicaid.

Boult will remain on the Bloomberg School faculty, but a national search is being conducted to find his replacement as the Eugene and Mildred Lipitz Professor and as director of the Lipitz Center. Under the leadership of Bruce Leff, MD, a professor with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Center staff continues to provide technical assistance to adopters and analyze and report the results of a randomized controlled trial of Guided Care, a novel, multidisciplinary model of comprehensive primary care for people with multiple chronic conditions.

In his new role, Boult will focus on the design, evaluation and policy translation of geriatric and long-term care innovations. As a geriatrician for more than 20 years, Boult has extensive experience in developing, testing, evaluating and diffusing new models of health care for older persons, including Guided Care. From October 1, 2009, to September 30, 2010, Boult served as a full-time residential fellow in the Health and Aging Policy Fellows program funded by the Atlantic Philanthropies. This program supports professionals working in the legislative and executive branches of government to learn about the creation and implementation of health policies that affect older Americans. Boult served his fellowship at CMS, where he worked in the Office of Research, Development and Information (ORDI) and the Center for Medicare (CM). In both of these sites, Boult collaborated with CMS leadership and staff to develop programs, regulations, and proposals to improve the Medicare program.

In 2000, Boult received the Excellence in Research Award from the American Geriatrics Society. From 2000-2005 he edited the “Models and Systems of Geriatric Care” section of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. In 2008, he received the David H. Solomon Award from the UCLA Medical School and the Excellence in Program Innovation Award (for Guided Care) from the American Public Health Association. His latest book, Guided Care: a New Nurse-Physician Partnership in Chronic Care, was published in 2009.
