Jay’s Wolfe Street Café in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has teamed up with Meatless Monday, a national public health campaign to reduce meat and saturated fat consumption. Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health works in association with the campaign.
Every Monday, beginning April 18th, the Café will feature at least one healthier, meatless entrée, along with a vegetarian soup and plenty of fresh salads. “Meatless Monday is easy to do at Jay’s because we offer a wide variety of healthy menu items” said Andre’ Wiggins, executive chef. Manager Dianna Deeds added, “Now students, faculty and staff know that every Monday they’ll be able to get a nice, healthy lunch and the specials will change weekly so there will always be something different to try.”
Alfred Sommer, MD, MHS, dean of the Bloomberg School, and Robert Lawrence, MD, associate dean, serve on the advisory board of the national Meatless Monday campaign. The campaign also has the support of 28 other public health schools. Dr. Lawrence described Meatless Monday as public health in action. “We are proud to support the campaign and welcome the opportunity to promote healthy eating to our own students, faculty and staff,” he said.
Jay’s Restaurant Group became the school’s new food service provider in January 2005. In addition to offering several daily lunch specials, including a daily vegetarian entrée, Jay’s offers salads, fresh sushi, grilled sandwiches, and gourmet pizza. For Meatless Monday, Jay’s will roll out new healthy, meatless items that will be available both in the café and from their extensive catering menu.
