Dr. Chong is a Contributing Scholar with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. Dr. Chong was formerly with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and held positions of Director of the National Public Health Laboratory, Director of the Disease Control Division, and Deputy Director General of Health (Public Health) prior to retiring in July 2022. He is currently serving as the Senior Health Advisor for the ASEAN Mitigation of Biological Threats (MBT) program, which lies under the purview of the ASEAN Health Cluster 2. His experience in ASEAN began in 2009, when Malaysia was lead country for the ASEAN Risk Communication Centre (now known as Risk Assessment and Risk Communication), rotating Chair for the ASEAN Partnership Laboratory and ASEAN Expert Group for Communicable Diseases (AEGCD). Subsequently, Malaysia also became the lead country for UNITEDengue (co-lead with Singapore) and the ASEAN EOC Network. Dr. Chong earned his MBBS and MPH degrees at Malaya University.
