Honoring the Inaugural $100k Achievement Award Winners

On Wednesday, January 25, 2023, the Lerner Center for Public Health Advocacy hosted a reception celebrating the inaugural Sommer Klag Advocacy Achievement Award winners, Shannon Frattaroli, PhD, ’99, MPH, ’94, and Joshua M. Horwitz, JD, core faculty at the Center for Gun Violence Solutions in the Department of Health Policy and Management. The Lerner Center also recognized Gerard Anderson, PhD, Elizabeth Letourneau, PhD, Paul Locke, DrPH ’98, MPH, JD, and Leonard Rubenstein, JD, LLM as finalists.
The reception was well-attended by faculty, staff, and students from across the Bloomberg School community. Dean Ellen MacKenzie, PhD ’79, ScM ’75, and Shelley Hearne, DrPH, MPH, director of the Lerner Center, provided insightful remarks on the importance of the awards, the honorees’ work, and the School’s strategic focus on advocacy in moving public health forward. Frattaroli and Horwitz shared the inspirational journey that led to the adoption of extreme risk protection orders across the nation.
The Lerner Center was excited to welcome Helaine Lerner, whose generous gift, provided alongside her late husband, Sid Lerner, made the Sommer Klag Advocacy Awards possible. Other notable attendees included Alfred Sommer, MD, MHS ’73, and Michael Klag, MD, MPH ’87, deans emeriti of the Bloomberg School, and Keshia Pollack Porter, Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management.
